Meet Wapiti!
Wapiti is a playful, affectionate coonhound/pointer mix with striking good looks and a personality to match. At about 60 pounds and born around January 1, 2024, this young pup is ready to find his forever family.
Named after the Shawnee word for “white rump elk,” Wapiti was found near Elk Creek Lake—and like his namesake, he’s a graceful jumper. He can clear a 3-foot gate with ease, so a home with a 5-foot fence would be best.
Wapiti loves staying active and would thrive with a family that enjoys walks, outdoor adventures, and playtime. He’s also a big fan of belly rubs and couch cuddles, striking a great balance between energy and affection.
Smart and eager to please, he’s learning his manners and already knows how to sit, come, and lay down—his version of lying down includes a slow, charming slide to the floor. He has a distinct, endearing howl when he spots squirrels or rabbits.
Wapiti gets along well with the resident dog and cats in his foster home, and he recently passed his first visit to doggie daycare with flying colors. He’s not yet a fan of car rides or being crated, but his foster is helping him build confidence through gentle desensitization.
As a typical young pup, Wapiti enjoys chewing, so a good supply of sturdy chew toys and natural chews is a must.
Wapiti is neutered, microchipped, crate trained, and up to date on vaccines.
If you’re looking for a loyal, active companion with a gentle heart and a goofy grin, Wapiti may be the one for you.
