Take the animal to your nearest veterinarian or shelter facility to have that pet scanned for a microchip. Place an ad on IndyLostPetAlert.com and your local neighborhood online groups (like nextdoor.com, Facebook, etc.) Remember to ask for proof of ownership for any individuals claiming the animal like photos, vet records, or a description of a detail about the animal that is not posted in your ad (specific fur marking on the animal, collar color or tag detail, etc.)
Visit IndyLostPetAlert.com and alert your microchip company ASAP. Visit your local humane society and shelter daily. In Indianapolis, city shelters have a 32 business hour stray hold policy before an animal can be released to rescue or placed for adoption. Animals must be claimed in person and cannot be claimed via phone or email
Create flyers with your pet’s name, description, weight, your contact information, and a good full body photo and distribute them in your immediate neighborhood to residences and businesses. Post them online on social media. Place a large yard sign in your yard. Often finders will drive around the immediate area looking for someone who has lost a pet.
